Welcome the Whyd’s new streaming App That Saves Songs from across the Web

    whyd_main

The new music start up  just launched its social music streaming iOS app. This app provides a centralized music streaming service by pulling songs from other platforms around the web. Providing its users to play and share nearly any song almost instantly.

    Whyd-app.jpg

The app functions similarly like the company’s web-based social streaming service which is first launched in 2012. Allowing users to collect and share songs culled from other streaming services, including SoundCloud, Vimeo, YouTube and Spotify without leaving the app.

“The significance might be lost on some people, who just assume that everything should also come in app form,” the company wrote in a blog spot.

    2

After creating a profile the app search for individual songs or playlists created by other users. You can simply stream songs individually or collect tracks into playlists of your own, which get shared on your profile. In this app tracks load surprisingly quickly. Most search results come from more indie-centric sources like Soundcloud and music blogs, meaning that even more obscure tracks are easy to find.

After making the web version of its service available to the public after an extended closed beta the Paris-based start up raised $700,000 in funding.

Whyd claims it is already working on an Android app, but Windows Phone users “might have to wait a little bit longer.”

  • ‘Namo’ Anti-virus Software To Protect PCs

‘Namo’ Anti-virus Software To Protect PCs

    namo-antivirus

NaMo is the name of a free anti-virus software dedicated to Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, which you can download on your PCs right now to ensure that your machines are safe from any security threats.

The Namo anti-virus software comes with featuresincluding real-time detection of infections, custom detection, intelligent scanning, and is light on hard disk according to the company.  This anti-virus offers basic protection to PC users currently, but the they are also planning to launch this for Mac. It is also expected to get regular updates. Data recovery services reviews often explain the cause of data loss and computer crashes come from lack of antivirus software.

“India is the third largest country globally in terms of Internet users. However, statistics show that only 13 per cent are using valid license of antivirus software and 30 per cent tend to re-install trial versions of same or other antivirus software,” Innovazion CEO Abhishek Gagneja.

Although features don’t have anything to do with the Modi, nor is it endorsed by him, but still its makers have decided to name it NaMo. May be it will help them in easy marketing of the product.

“By building this software, we wanted to … congratulate the current government. We also want to pass a message to the government that the nation has high expectations from them,” he said.

There is already a NAMO online store for Narendra Modi inspired products. Known as The Namo Store which sells products in three categories Namo Tech, Namo Lekh and Namo Mantra. Plus, there are already Namo-branded smartphones and tablets in market.

  • Issues with use of Statistics in ‘Big Data’ Applications

Issues with use of Statistics in ‘Big Data’ Applications

    bigdata

Big data often contains data sets with thousands of variables, which increases the time complexity of variability reduction methods such as regression.Quantity of Data

    Regression – basics:

Firstly, let us try to understand the uses of regression. Let us consider simple linear regression with two independent variables (say x1 and x2) and one dependent variable (say y). Let us assume that we have 20 observations. Instead of using linear regression, one can estimate the value of y using past values of y. One way is to use Fourier series expansion and finding out derivatives of order 1, 2, 3, … However, this is not efficient because the variance of the estimate is higher than that of the estimate in linear regression. Moreover, changes in x1 and x2 occur before changes in y and there is a cause-effect relationship between them (leading indicators). Hence, it is better to use linear regression to predict y.

The hypothesis can be written as: Linear Regression - Hypothesis

The objective is to minimize sum of squares of errors in the hypothesis estimates. This can be written as

Cost Function - Linear RegressionDifferentiating with respect to θ0, θ1 and θ2, we get the normal equation which can be written in matrix notation as:

Linear regression is not stable under all cases. There is a special case called multicollinearity in which all the variables will be statistically significant, but the solution changes drastically with changes in data points. To avoid this, we need to form a contingency table, which shows the relationship between x1 and x2. A 2×2 contingency table looks like:

    2×2 Contingency Table

In case of multicollinearity, the sum of elements near diagonals (either main or sub) will be much higher than the sum of elements in the other cells. It is essential to perform this check before going for linear regression in order to ensure stability. There are standard methods to remove multicollinearity, but they are beyond the scope of this article.

What is different in big data?

Big data contains thousands of variables, which leads to a mxm contingency table, where m is very large. The biggest problem in this case is that not all thousand variables can be measured simultaneously. The proportion of variables measured decreases with increase in number of variables. In case of big data, the proportion of populated cells in contingency table is close to 0. Also, number of observations is very large, thus increasing the time complexity of inversion of XTX (mxm matrix).

     A statistician’s view:

The popular feeling among analytics professionals is that big data cannot be handled. However, this is not true. It is true that the space complexity of big data cannot be reduced, but the time complexity can be reduced using algorithms and parallel computing [i.e. operations such as inverting (XTX)mxm]. Numerical computations methods have improved over time and can be used to cope with the increasing volume of data. However, the problem of sparseness of contingency table still remains due to unavailability of simultaneous measurement tools.

In short, the problem is not with the volume of the data; it is with the unavailability of right kind of data.

  • Dell eyes $50 million savings; Standardizes data platforms and business intelligence tools

Dell eyes $50 million savings; Standardizes data platforms and business intelligence tools

    Capture1

Dell is currently consolidating data platforms and BI tools while giving business users more options for self-service and deep analytics.

“When we looked at that $70 million BI spend in the business, 70% of it — or about $50 million — was spent taking data out of the IT environment and putting it back together in their own databases and customer-support systems. We looked at that and asked, ‘how can we reduce that big, $70 million chunk?’”: Rob Schmidt – Executive Director for IT, Analytics, and Business Intelligence

Dell announced its BI plan two years ago. It assessed cost centers of business units under IT wing by surveying more than 130 business executives. The study found that more than $50 million was being spent annually on its data warehousing, BI and analytics tools. It also found that an additional amount of almost $70 million was being spent on independent data management, BI and analytics initiatives.

One way of reducing this amount is to build a developer-friendly architecture around centralized. The centralized resources include 200-plus TB Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) and SAS analytics environment. The idea was to

    • give better access to data
    • get more development and analysis capabilities
    • get more autonomy on IT supported centralized framework

For this purpose, a three-tier architecture was launched 18 months back.

“We’re moving to a platform where the business develops its own applications, but they migrate them up into our second tier, where we automate and put processes around the applications. The third tier is our production data warehouse, which the business can’t touch.”

This initiative has not changed the technologies drastically. Teradata, SAS, MicroStrategy (production reporting) and Tableau Software (ad-hoc data exploration) were already in use. Business process re-engineering was the biggest challenge as business units signing on to take part would no longer be able to extract data and go their own way.

“We’re teaching and certifying each business unit to develop against our data platforms. And there’s a formal agreement between myself and a VP in each business that lays out what you can and can’t do on the platform.”

“Thou shalt not” rules limit data extraction from the warehouse and querying against certain tables that will bring the database down. Certified DBAs and developers within each business unit know that Schmidt can ‘take away access in a heartbeat’ if something impacts the production environment. According to Schmidt, business units get access to more data and better capabilities than they ever had in their independent reporting and analytical environments in exchange for giving up their silos. A Hadoop cluster for high-scale, low-cost storage and a Teradata Aster database for rapid analytical modeling are some of the new capabilities. Social network data, clickstreams from the Dell.com site and machine sensor data from Dell equipment in the field are currently semi-structured.

    Data-Center

“We used to run customer scoring in batch, and we would update it every two or three months, but now we’re doing near-real-time scoring.”

According to Schmidt, Dell can support faster, more-frequent, and more-pervasive analysis using these new tools. For example, a marketing customer-propensity-score analysis that previously required pages of SQL and 16 days of data prep on Teradata takes less than five minutes on Aster. Aster is also taking on a complex, high-scale analysis used to spot customers with expiring warranties. That task used to be outsourced to a third-party service company.

“We paid that vendor a significant amount of money, yet we were only able to do the analysis for the Americas. With these savings alone we have paid for the new environment and we’ve rolled out to all of our regions.”

Dell has also completed a social media proof-of-concept (POC) project whereby social media data captured through Salesforce.com Radian6 social media monitoring environment is used to develop a single view of Dell customers and prospects, tying transactional records with social media handles and email addresses. According to Schmidt, this effort will reduce the cost of fragmented data-retention and analysis efforts across various departments.

Waves of POC projects are aimed at improving customer service through machine data analysis. For example, the customer experience on Dell.com is being optimized by analyzing clickstream data that reveals site navigation patterns and dead ends on the site that turned into service phone calls. A predictive maintenance POC project is aimed at spotting failing hard drives and other equipment before it becomes a problem for customers. This ‘Internet-of-Things’ style deployment will tap into sensor data from Dell hardware in use in the field.

“We’re seeing a massive reduction in data leaving the data warehouse, and we’re also seeing a massive increase in the amount of analytics that can be done. Because the data is shared across the company, there’s very little that I have to do expand this to other groups.”

Shift to a centralized approach has not been hassle free. Dell is expected to layoff more than 1000 employees in the attempt to consolidate redundant organizations and maintaining fewer independent databases and software instances. A Dell spokesman later claimed that the employees were relocated in order to avoid layoff. So far Dell’s marketing, sales, and service organizations are all on board. Schmidt is looking to certify more groups and get to that $50 million savings goal within the next year.

  • The ‘Something Different’ Amazon Fire Phone

The ‘Something Different’ Amazon Fire Phone

bezosphoneAmazon CEO Jeff Bezos believes there is room in the market for something different. Even with the dominant leads that Apple and Samsung hold, Bezos told The Associated Press in an interview, “it’s still early” in the wireless device business.

The phone’s most significant feature, called “Firefly,” employs audio and object recognition technology to identify products and present the user with ways to purchase the items through Amazon. Users can simply snap a photo of a book, for instance, and Firefly will offer up its title and author, give more information about it and provide ways to buy it through Amazon with a single click.

    firefly630

“We wanted to make a device that’s great for one person,” Bezos said. “It’s like a certain person likes chocolate and another person likes vanilla. The customer can choose.”

Another feature, called “dynamic perspective,” uses four infrared, front-facing cameras that tell the phone where the user’s face and eyes are located. The feature adjusts the user interface so that tilting the screen relative to the viewer’s face can toggle through screens, scroll through websites, make online video game characters fly up or down, and render buildings and other custom-made art in 3-D.

The feature that lets the new Amazon Fire Phone send a movie or TV show wirelessly to a compatible television while the the phone serves as a “second screen” to display information about actors, locations, and scenes is shown.amazon3

Amazon is using Gorilla Glass 3 here with a rubber frame. The buttons are indeed aluminum though. It’s also featuring a 4.7-inch IPS LCD display, which does 590 nits of brightness, so it gets pretty bright which is good. As far as the processor goes it’s running the Snapdragon 800 with an Adreno 330 GPU and has 2GB of RAM. On the back we’ve got a 13MP camera with f/2.0 aperture. The best part of the camera is that the Fire Phone includes unlimited photo storage in Amazon’s cloud storage. There’s also dual-stereo speakers on the bottom of the Fire Phone, which should give us a good sound experience.

The entry-level Fire phone, introduced Wednesday, costs $199 with a two-year AT&T contract, which places it at the high end of smartphone pricing. But the phone comes with 32 gigabytes of memory, double the standard 16 GB. It also comes with 12 months of Amazon Prime, the company’s free shipping, video, music and book subscription plan, which normally costs $99 a year.

  • Yellow Pages – New to the ‘Online’ way

Yellow Pages – New to the ‘Online’ way

    Yellow Pages – Advertisements

Montreal’s Yellow Pages Group is well known for advertising, especially in print media. It is a competitor in a segment which is expected to be dominated by Google and other online sources. However, despite the competition, today it has around 276,000 Canadian advertisers out of a potential pool of 1.2 million.

Yellow Pages recently opened itself to data science. This marks the end of outsourcing its big data applications. The company looked at strategic cost implications of in-house big data application to get higher profit margin. It has spent millions to consolidate its 18 data centers into 3 and brought its outsourced business intelligence application in-house by constructing Hadoop clusters to house it.

The company has two analytics applications:

    • Anametrix, used internally
    • Yellow Pages Analytics, used by advertisers

Advertisers use Yellow Pages Analytics to crunch metrics like visitors, page views, KPIs and to calculate potential ROI. This is done using big data – one table has 52 billion records with millisecond response times.

Richard Langlois is the current IT director of Yellow Pages. He was hired in 2012 to transform the company by accelerating the move to digital. When he was hired Yellow Pages Analytics was outsourced to a California firm. Strategic cost implications led the company to bring the company into the digital age by bringing the application in-house. Langlois was given a blank cheque and 18 months to do an infrastructure overhaul, part of a four year plan.

Langlois appeared in a big data conference in Toronto in June, 2014. He claimed that there is no need to re-invent the wheel for big data applications.

“What you know about business intelligence, data center architecture, development, strategic planning … we use all of that and big data.”

Yellow Pages is transitioning from print medium to online. There are subtle differences between these media and Yellow Pages is looking for ways to leverage these differences and get maximum returns.

“We need to provide location-based content so you bring business to the advertiser.”

Langlois presented the flow chart of Yellow Pages Analytics at the conference. There are 16 servers and 2 primary nodes for the Hadoop clusters. Also, there are 5 data base machines in production for availability and load balancing. There will be an analytics services layer for business intelligence dashboards to make things easier for small and medium size companies to do analytics and to relieve the IT department of extract, transformation and load (ETL) operations. This does not include improving the collection of data, creating new applications such as unified tracking tool and methodology.

Despite the complexity of the flow chart, Langlois maintains big data roadmap is no different from an enterprise architecture roadmap. He also added that it is important to decouple architecture from projects so that changes in projects don’t affect the architecture.

  • iOS 8 features that are ‘inspired’ by Android

iOS 8 features that are ‘inspired’ by Android

    Apple2-640x360

Apple recently unveiled the latest version of its mobile operating system iOS 8 at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. According to company this is “the biggest release since the launch of the App Store,”.

Many of these Android inspirations are more regular and obvious than others, including the new QuickType typing suggestions in iOS 8, Apple’s new support for third-party keyboard modifications applications, the “Hey, Siri” word for always-on listening features, the Widgets support in the Notification Center, the battery stats shown in iOS 8’s Settings, actionable notifications, and the improved photo backup in iCloud. Developer-oriented features, like the ability of uploading an app video in the App Store or to offer app beta tests to customers will also sound familiar to Android users.

    QuickType and third-party keyboards support

Apple showed a big deal about its brand new QuickType keyboard. The keyboard features predictive typing and can learn based on your typing habits. In addition to QuickType, iOS 8 will also bring support for third-party keyboard applications. But Android users have had these features for years.

    ‘Hey Siri’

There are improvements to Siri including addition of 22 new dictation languages and song recognition integration using Shazam. But the ability to launch Siri by speaking the phrase “Hey Siri” when the phone is plugged into a car reminds us of Android’s Google Now where the phrase “Ok, Google” the app can be launched.

    iCloud Drive Storage

With iCloud Drive, a Dropbox-like service for storing documents on the cloud. In addition to Dropbox, Android and Apple users already have Google Drive. As iCloud is limited to 5GB of free storage, Google Drive offers 15GB for free, while Dropbox initially offers 2GB for free alongwith the ability to earn up to 20GB as referral bonus.

    icloud-drive

    Widgets

Apple users will finally get access to basic widgets in new iOS update. Not same as on Android where you can place widgets on your home and lock screens, however, iOS 8 widgets will be limited to the pull-down Notification Center.

    Interactive Notifications

Interactive notifications will let users to quickly respond to messages, accept calendar appointments without having to enter the app itself. Android has offered these kinds of actionable notifications since 2012.

    App Store Previews

Now in App Store is what Apple calls “App Previews,” similar to Google Play Store where you can watch app demo videos before downloading the apps.

    14-wwdc-2014-keynote-1

    TestFlight

TestFlight, a new technology Apple acquired this year which will give iPhone and iPad owners the facility test their apps in beta before they are officially released in the App Store. Also it is known that Google has allowed Android users to test their beta apps already.

Don’t call it a rip-off. Apple adds its own imprint on features that Android users have long enjoyed. They are adding thier own spin. Notifications, for instance, will be interactive straight from the lock screen, which is not currently the case on Android.
